Why Digital Colposcopy Is Changing the Examination Experience

High-definition visualization without eyepieces opens new opportunities for providers, patients, and clinical education.

For decades, traditional optical colposcopy has required providers to examine tissue through binocular eyepieces. Digital technology offers a modern approach to visualization, documentation and patient education.

The Lutech LT-300HD brings high-definition imaging directly to the clinician through a high-definition display, eliminating the need to remain positioned behind an eyepiece during the exam.

A Clear View Without Eyepieces

The LT-300HD combines a Sony HD camera, optical magnification, LED illumination, automatic setting, Zoom and Manual FineFocus, and a 5.5-inch integrated display.

Clinicians see in real time and share the image across connected monitors, creating greater flexibility in how they position themselves and communicate during examinations.

The LT-300HD has no visible lag time. With a frame refresh of 90 frames per second (every 11 milliseconds), it refreshes at a greater speed than the human eye can process.

One View. More Opportunities to Educate.

Traditional optical colposcopy generally limits direct visualization to the examiner. Digital colposcopy makes it possible for other authorized participants to see the same view.

For patients who choose to view their examination, it offers a visual reference that providers can use when explaining anatomical structures, examination findings, and continued care.

For residency programs, this creates opportunities for real-time instruction.

Technology That Supports Patient Understanding

A small study published in Patient Education and Counseling examined the effect of video colposcopy on patient anxiety and pain. The researchers split 81 women into a video intervention group and a control group to observe anxiety during examination visits.

Overall anxiety dropped from one visit to the next for all patients. The participants who were in the video colposcopy group experienced a significantly larger reduction in anxiety. The greatest reduction in anxiety was noted for those requiring laser treatment. They also reported lower levels of pain compared to the control group.

Technology That Supports Documentation

In addition to connecting to a monitor and laptop for shared visualization during the examination, the LT-300HD captures HD imagery and seamlessly connects to patient EMRs.

The LT-300HD allows clinicians to perform examinations in an upright position while viewing the targeted area on the device’s screen and recording HD video or capturing high-resolution still images hands-free.

The LutechViewer software, included with all Lutech digital colposcopes, attaches images to the majority of EMR systems, including Epic, Cerner, eClinical Works and Athena.
