Overview

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program established a statewide TeleSANE network to expand access to high-quality, trauma-informed medical forensic care for survivors of sexual assault. The program supports seventy-one healthcare facilities across the state, enabling local clinicians to perform exams with real-time guidance from experienced forensic nurses through telehealth technology.

The initiative was designed to address gaps in access to specialized forensic care, particularly in rural and underserved communities, while maintaining consistent clinical standards and a patient-centered approach.

The Challenge

Prior to implementation, many emergency departments across the state lacked the training, protocols, and equipment necessary to provide comprehensive sexual assault medical forensic exams. Some facilities did not have access to colposcopes or reliable forensic imaging tools, limiting their ability to document injuries accurately and efficiently.

Traditional optical colposcopes and standalone forensic cameras were often cost-prohibitive, difficult to use, or impractical for deployment across a large network of hospitals. In some cases, the absence of appropriate imaging equipment contributed to delays in care or required survivors to travel long distances or interact with law enforcement for documentation purposes, increasing patient distress.

The Solution

The program sought a consistent and effective way to provide trauma-informed care while capturing forensic evidence. To meet these needs, the program selected Lutech’s digital colposcopes for distribution across its TeleSANE network. The decision was based on key requirements including ease of use, image quality, mobility, and compatibility with telehealth consultation.

Lutech’s digital colposcopes provided high-resolution imaging suitable for forensic documentation, supported minimally invasive exams, and allowed images to be captured and stored as part of the medical record. The device also functioned as both a colposcope and a documentation camera, reducing the need for multiple imaging systems or multiple appointments for the patient.

Implementation

With the support of grant funding, Lutech digital colposcopes were distributed to participating hospitals throughout the state. The devices were integrated into existing TeleSANE platforms, allowing local clinicians to conduct exams while receiving guidance from remote forensic nursing experts.

Images captured during exams were incorporated into patient medical records, supporting continuity of care, peer review, and quality assurance for legal evidence. Standardized equipment improved clinician confidence and consistency in forensic documentation across sites.

The Results

Following implementation, the program observed significant improvements across clinical, operational, and patient experience measures:

  • Expanded access to experienced forensic nurses in rural and underserved areas
  • Professional collaboration around visual evidence captured by the colposcope
  • Improved ability to document subtle injuries and foreign objects as evidence
  • More consistent, reliable, and trauma-informed medical care and documentation
  • Reduced need for patient transfers, extended travel, and repeat appointments
  • Created patient-centered evaluations for victims in more remote areas
  • Increased efficiency by standardizing use of a single multifunctional colposcope

Conclusion

This statewide SANE program strengthened its TeleSANE infrastructure and significantly improved access to trauma-informed forensic care with the addition of Lutech colposcopes. The program built a strong reputation for serving sexual assault victims by connecting on-site clinicians with skilled off-site consultants using the latest telehealth technology and a Lutech colposcope.

Lutech’s easy-to-use digital platform was a key factor in enhancing clinician confidence during assault evaluations and standardizing evidence documentation. Nurses and examiners in emergency departments benefited from the advanced clinical knowledge and expertise of healthcare providers trained in treating victims of sexual assault, helping bridge gaps in care and meet critical needs across the state.
